Why does Max have such low confidence level?
In the book max is always calling himself a "goon" or "butt head" and letting people tell him what to do, even his 2 foot friend Freak (Kevin)! I think that one of the many reasons Max has low self esteem is because at a very young age he watched his dad murder his mom! Now he looks exactly like his dad and a lot of people are scared of him. Most people run away as soon as they see him so if anyone actually talks to him I think he wants to keep it that way so he does what he can to please them.
I don't really think it is always Max's fault that Freak is the leader in their friendship, I think that is just the way Freak is. He is used to people following his orders, sometimes it is good but other times it might not be, but in their friendship I think Freak is the perfect match for Max. They go on quest's and journeys together instead of sitting in Max's underground room all day like Max was planning on doing for almost the whole summer. Freak is not the only one on Max's tale, Gram (Max's grandma) is worrying 24/7 if Max is okay and what not. I think Gram is worried that Max will be like his dad. He is half way there because he already looks like him. If i could go into the book I would go up to Gram and inform her that Max is a wuss. He is nothing to worry about.
The one thing i still have not fully understood in this book is if the town Max lives in is GOOD or BAD. I am wondering if the way he was raised or the nieghborhood he grew up in has any effect on his personality.
